SEVEN reasons why people should debate

1. Develop our ability in convincing other people

When we debate, we practice our convincing skills since we tend to promote our side to the audience. Debate can help us develop strategies to make our arguments as true and reliable as well as convincing enough for the audience to listen to us and believe us as well.

2. Creates a better judgment.

When we debate, we tend to look at the two faces of the coin. What do I mean by this? We don’t only see the other side of the story but the other side as well. We can create better judgment when we hear the different reasons or arguments presented to us. We not only see the good side of the topic but the bad side as well, with this we are able to choose which side we are going to believe in.

3. Improves our critical thinking abilities

A person, during the debate, is always ready to face certain questions thrown to him during his speech and he should be ready to take the questions and must not lose his composure. How can he do this? He can readily receive questions thrown to him when he is can think of an answer right away. With this, he develops his critical thinking abilities by being able to reason out at that instant.

4. Improves communication skills.

The debate is compose of almost 95% of talking; we define the motion, we set and discuss arguments, we criticize and rebut arguments and we ask clarification when we give points. We improve communication skills when we debate because we are to defend our side by talking; because we are to clearly expose our thoughts through our words. With this we practice our communication skills: the way we ask questions, give answers, and give our speech.

5. Enrich our skills in comparing arguments and method in presenting them.

Method is judged when we debate. When we talk of method, we are trying to tell of the way in which the speaker presented the arguments to the audience. When we debate, we are creating strategies to make our team win. One of the strategies we can do is to classify our statements according to the level of strength. We try to present those ideas which we think are the strongest from the list for our side to be stronger that the opponent.

6. Builds up self confidence
When we debate, we can build up self confidence. We need to prompt our audience to believe what we are telling them and we can’t do this when we are not sure of what we are talking about. We need to boost our self-confidence as we stand up to tackle our arguments to show our audience that we are sure of what we are telling them. We also need to be tough enough to show to our opponents that we are not afraid of them and to strongly face the arguments and rebuttals thrown to us.

7. Expands our knowledge, especially about current events.

When we debate, we research on certain topics to be discussed during the debate, this will make us up to date on certain issues because most of the topics on debate tackles current issues. It also a means of implanting new knowledge and ideas about different topics which we seldom think of. It makes us understand issues because when we debate, we dig anything which is connected with the topic for us to see the real story behind the issue. Thus we are able to gather new knowledge form our research because Matter is one of the criteria.
